She's married to Orlando Bloom, she's a Victoria's Secret angel, and she is insanely beautiful. What more could you want??

2. Abbey Lee Kershaw
Runway supermodel with a current campaign for Versace. She also did a Rag & Bone DIY project, but it's slightly more x-rated. We love her dark, sort of drug-addict, alternative style. She is just so COOL!

OK so she's really an actress (but not a particularly good one, so let's just stick with model). She's been appearing in heaps of editorials lately and also modeled for Asos! She is a true blue Aussie beauty. We love her bohemian style.

Shoulder Cut-out

I've been seeing this trend around quite a bit lately. Shirts, tees, blouses, with the shoulder corner cut out. I guess it's a clever, unexpected way of showing a little skin and still be quite conservative. Bought a pretty floral blouse with shoulder cutouts on my last shopping trip. Paired it casually with my shorts and flats the other day, and when my mom saw it, she said, "What are you wearing lah? Hole here hole there.. I said, "Mom, it's called fashion!". She shakes her head.

So what do you think of the shoulder cut-out? Fashion trend or here to stay?

Skinny Vs. Wide Leg

I read an article on Style: Magazine recently. It was about the change of popular taste in denim, noting a shift from skinny to wide-leg. It pointed out head-buyers in the states that have gone from stocking skinnies to the opposite - picking out only wide-legged ones. This got me thinking about my own stack of skinnies... Are they really going out of style? *cries*

If you have been on Thepoplook.com's Facebook page recently, you would have seen our recent poll on the two styles. 51 votes for the skinny and 23 for the wide-leg. Hmm.. maybe the author was wrong afterall!

But then again, there's this new cult denim brand, MOTHER jeans and in a recent interview, Tim Kaeding, the Creative Director was asked:

Q~ Which styles were the most popular among buyers?

A~ “Almost every boutique placed orders for The Wilder and The Drama!"

And yes, they are both wide-legged jeans.

I guess only time will tell. But what do you think? Are we witnessing a tectonic-shift in the denim world?

Ok, so I was shopping on GILT.com the other day. Tom Binns jewellery was on sale and I was just about to purchase these perfect pair of earrings when the dreaded "Sold Out" sign flashed on my screen. Hate it when that happens!

The only silver lining when something sells out at Gilt is that they offer you something similar. And in my case, I was introduced to a relatively-unknown label - Anton Heunis.

Of course, I clicked on them right away and wow.. now I'm obsessed with his creations! Described as "Modern-Vintage", I think this oxymoron really does sum up what his collections are all about. Take a look :)

Theyskens' Theory

"Spring's most eagerly anticipated collection." - Net-a-porter on the collaboration between New York label, Theory and Belgian designer, Olivier Theyskens.

I've been a fan of Theory for a long time now. Classic cuts in the most amazing fabrics, not to mention immaculate workmanship! But not gonna lie, I've never heard of Olivier Theyskens until lately. After doing some research online, I am impressed with his CV, having worked at both Nina Ricci and Rochas.

In any case, I was excited when the collection finally launched!

The blazers and shirts have a triangle cut at the back of the collar. Theyskens explained that he likes the way shoulders shrug forward. And the hems of the tees are spliced at the sides so it can be worn with just the front tucked in. I thoroughly appreciate these small details, that really, when it comes down to it, makes all the difference.

Denim on Denim

So, the general rule of thumb when matching clothing is to match tops and bottoms that contrast. Be it different colours, solids with prints or contrasting materials. Lately we're seeing a lot of denim on denim which I find "breaks the rules" but you know what, I love it! My most recent purchase is a denim shirt! And yeap, straight away, paired it with my denim shorts :)

Thepoplook.com doesn't stock any denim at the moment. Hmm... will have to look into that.

Mission Colour Block

Ah! It's that time of year again.. when we get to feast on spring/summer collections :) Enough of fur coats and thick layering, beautiful as they may be. I am loving this season's creations perfect for our sunny weather!

As with every transition from winter to spring, we see COLOUR. From florals to the most amazing abstract prints, runways are just dripping with rich hues. A personal favourite is Jil Sander's 2011 Spring/Summer show in Milan. Although she had a few looks with prints, I found the plain colour-block looks most inspiring! Makes me want to go to my closet to see what I can put together!

MIDI - The New Length

Personally, I have always steered clear from the midi length. Whenever I go through my mom's closet to comb through her vintage stuff, I always think the midi skirt looks old-fashioned and you know... kinda frumpy.

I remember the micro mini trend just seasons back. The shorter the better! Then last season it was all about the maxi. Floorlength-swishing dresses and skirts! This time, it seems a compromise has been reached. The midi is rocking every runway!

These mid-calf pieces conservatively hides the knees while flaunting the ankles and of course - our precious footwear! Watch out for the midi trend this season!

Mary Katrantzou S2011

I saw this collection a while back and ever since, the images and dresses are stuck in my head. In this collection, Mary Katrantzou (she's Greek!) was inspired by 70's photography of Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin. She cleverly uses the interior of homes as the subject of her dresses. Digital prints are artistically matched without compromising the details on the picture. I especially love when she plays with the third dimension and uses soft chiffons as curtains, necklaces as chandeliers and tassels as water.

I would lovvee to own one of these masterpieces. Although, I would probably not wear it, instead hang it on my wall.. and stare..

So I spent the New Year in Singapore this year :) Took a bumboat out along some river to watch the fireworks which was breathtaking! You guys should try it sometime.. they go up real close to where the fireworks take place, it was magical and quite scary at the same time.

Anyway, I also managed to catch the Valentino exhibition at Resorts World during my trip down. They pulled out 100 amazing haute couture pieces from Italy. It's a past/present/future show, so kinda like a cross-section of his life's work... and like Wow. Seriously.It was soo BEAUTIFUL! You HAVE TO go see it if you're down in Singapore! The exhibition will be on till 13th Feb so you have like over a month!

I managed to get a few pictures of the dresses but trust me.. without a flash and the low light conditions, none of my pictures do them justice!

There was so much to marvel at. His play on proportions, his unexpected use of materials, his creation of volume, his decadent take on multi-cultural-wear, ... *loses breath* But if I could describe the collection in one word it would be -

haha.. kidding. Well, that too, but the word is -

This Garavani man is the master of detail I tell you! It's insane.. The beading, the layering, the pleating, the colour-matching... his execution is flawless!

The Giving Tree

Saw this a while back on Daul Kim's blog and really wanted to share it. The clip really did evoke a lot of feelings albeit being a little trippy. First, I felt sadness, that humans are selfish beings. Then I thought, in my life, the most giving people are my parents and I guess the Giving Tree can represent parents who sacrifice so much for their kids. The clip also made me believe more in the good of people in this world. I guess you can also view the Giving Tree as the giving Earth that we keep tapping resources from and soon have nothing to offer. But like with all things, you can argue the flipside, that the tree is overly giving and too ideal. We as humans who don't perceive this behaviour as normal would naturally be guarded with such behaviour. I guess you can look at it at million angles.

Haha.. there I go trying to be all analytical..

Afteroon everyone! We've been seeing a lot wild jewellery and accessories lately. The ones hitting the market are so tasteful and artistic in design. Here are some of our favourite labels injecting wilderness to their pieces.

Christopher Ross - Bold, wild and yet classy, these belts are all over Atlantis Home and Sea of Shoes. Paired with a simple shift dress or to give waist definition with full skirt, these are to-die-for. Costing an average USD500 a pop, you can only expect impeccable craftmanship. You see second hand, vintage pieces on ebay and it's obvious they really hold their value. I can imagine it being some rich, stylish old lady's heirloom piece she passes down generations to come. If only my grandma had one of these, rocking it out in her sarong back in the day.. if only..

Hanna Bernhard - Ahhh.. lovee.. This husband/wife duo designs almost every animal into a french bakelite, swarovski masterpiece. This label is also a favourite of style icon Iris Apfel. Jane from Sea of shoes did complain that the pieces are heavy and wearing a Hannah Bernhard Necklace the whole day caused her a back ache. Well, I guess there are just some sacrfices that have to be made..

Noir Jewellery - The cutest wild rings out there. All their animal rings are set with pave stones to give that extra BLING! And it's no wonder why Noir jewellery has been favourites of Paris Hilton, Rihanna and Lady Gaga! We managed to grab Pete the Porcupine at a bargain on Ebay, Yay!

Well, for those who don't, Nuffnang acts as the middleman between bloggers and advertisers. You see the little "Nuffnang" logo under adverts on most blogs and also the "I serve Nuffnang" banners. Why didn't I think of this?!! In just 3 years, Nuffnang is already a multi-national company with presence in Malaysia, Singapore, Phillippines and Australia.

From personal experience, ever since I started thepoplook.com, everywhere I turn online I see Nuffnang. They really have a strong control of the social media market, from blogs to tweets (they have Churp Churp which does the same thing for Tweeters), Nuffnang's omnipresent online.

Yesterday, I was just sent an email from a friend with the subject title: "When will you reach this?". Opened the email and it's a link to an article of Nuffnang being featured on BBC! I was in awe and very much inspired. It's people like Mr Cheo and Mr Tiah that have become role models for all young entrepreneurs. A big congratulations goes to Nuffnang and team!

Anyway, to sum things up, I'd like to share a quote. Mr Cheo's advice for budding entrepreneurs:

"Find something that you think can make money, and make sure you run it by a couple of people and don't drag your feet on it. Just do it.. There is no better way of knowing something will work than to actually try it out. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take."

We had an instant, (some were pretty funny) response :) I guess I can conclude that most of you guys are in front of the com on FB at 11pm..hehe.. The latest, Mathew Williamson talks about his exclusive collection for Net-a-porter.

3. Singing. When we need a good break, nothing beats singing our-lungs-out to songs on Youtube. Some of our fave songs lately on repeat 1 at the office :) Kara Dioguardi - Terrified, Bruno Mars - Just The Way You Are, covered by Chuan.

So, since it's fall/winter now, I guess us in warmer countries should be looking at the Spring 2011 line instead :) And there's no complaining what's coming our way - happy colours in floral prints are seen all over the D&G Spring 2011 Ready-To-Wear catwalk.

The D&G collection is definitely a perfect marriage of vintage cuts and pastel colours - the floral rompers are inspiration from the flower power days and those 50s bloomers are also back in full force. I love it! Really, I'm such a grandma at heart :)

Lanvin for H & M

The short clip for the Lanvin/H&M collaboration is out and has gone viral! The much anticipated collection will hit H&M stores 20th November, and I'm just upset that we don't have a H&M in Malaysia yet. What's taking so long?? The price points aren't high, it's fast fashion, and that is perfect for us, right? Well, I guess this new clip that shows every piece from the Lanvin for H&M collection should keep us quietly entertained for about 5 minutes before we ask again - where is H&M in Malaysia??

The prices of these to-die-for cocktail dresses are pretty steep even for H&M standards. They range from USD199-USD249. We are talking about the same price range as brands like Juicy Couture, Alice and Olivia and BCBG. It goes to show that even as Lanvin collaborates with a very mass-targeting brand, Alber Elbaz has stuck to his guns, to provide luxury products, even if it means higher prices.

"I have said in the past that I will never do a mass-marketing collection, but what intrigued me was the idea of H&M going luxury rather than Lanvin going public" -Alber Elbaz.

Well, I guess these prices shouldn't be bothering us much - since WE DON"T HAVE IT IN MALAYSIA! huh..

Well, after all my complaining, I must say that I enjoyed the clip, trippy yet fabulouss. And I'm glad there's a brand like H&M in the world, for the masses yet collaborating with names like Jimmy Choo, Sonia Rykiel and now, Lanvin. And I continue to hope to see a H&M store in this part of the world (Malaysia) soon!

Hey everyone! I know.. it's been a while - like a year - a while, since I blogged. We have been sooo busy with thepoplook.com, getting it set up, plans to grow and it's really so rewarding to see how far we've come. I know we've said this a million times on our FB page, but we'd like to thank our family, friends, bloggers, and most of all - our customers who have been patiently supportive, you know who you are. It has been an amazing journey thus far, and we are excited for the many more years to come.. really, thanks.

Ok, enough of the mushy thanks. Was just reading our last few entries, and feel them so outdated - strong shoulders, with studs, in black - very much O-V-E-R. If you notice on thepoplook.com, our items have slowly evolved this past year - from florals to maxis and now a lot of solid block colours in casual blouses and dresses. I guess, our evolving tastes are very much reflected in our collection. We read the mags now and a lot of it covers the fall/winter collections, so we've been trying to incorporate a lot of maxi skirts, long cardis and dark hues. Trying to make fall/winter south east asia - friendly :)

Just watched Michael Jackson's movie - This is It and enjoyed it immensely :) There is no wonder why they call him the King of Pop. From start to end, I was bopping and swaying on my seat. From the movie, you can tell that MJ was hands on and knew EXACTLY what he wanted for his concert from musical direction to stage props - he explained calmly, with such precision. And when you see the "corrected" version, you realise he was always spot on! It is clear that his dancers, musicians and crew loved and respected him.

And don't you think it's amazing how MJ could just start trends so easily. From his red jacket in "Thriller" to his diamond glove, from everything military-styled to now BALMAIN, his charm and confidence pull everything off!

Bright colours make me happy :) - here are some tips on adding colour to your fashion style. (found on shopbop)

Work a little bold colour into your look with a graphic print. Sticking with black everywhere else and mixing textures keeps this look from feeling like its trying too hard.

Ok, girls, I really have got to share this AMAZING find with you! I had heard of sillicon stick-on bras for months before I finally bought one. I had been aware that there were a lot of copies of these kind of bras, but knew I had to get the original Nu Bra, approved and carried by Victoria's Secret. After putting them on for the first time, I wondered why I had waited so long before my purchase! Nu Bra has been the solution to all my "revealing bra" problems. Because of the sticky silicone pad, the bra cup sticks on to you like skin - comfortable yet unyielding. You can jump, run, and even sweat, yet, these babies will stay on PERFECT - trust me!

"Youth comes with Age" - Jean Cocteau

Ok, so I was just surfing the internet and was taken aback when I saw old .. yes, REAL OLD ladies in high-fashion shots. Here's introducing Old Ladies Rebellion, a fashion label by 24-year-old French, Fanny Karst. This label is designed specifically for older women and uses ordinary, old-looking models. (Although I did read that these models used to be Givenchy's muses in the 60s - so, not so ordinary after all, eh?). The line features forgiving shift dresses in silk, modern prints and even puns - "not at your age", proving that ahmas now can be elegant AND rock n' roll! The line originally designed for the older woman, has been described as very wearable, for ladies from 18-80. Personally, these pieces aren't for me. Although I can imagine Kim Catrall looking elegant in some of these dresses - making it look oh-so-chic in the streets of the City. Also, OLR reminds me of fashion-business moguls, Mary-kate (or is it Ashley) Olsen in elegant, oversized dresses.

What a breath of fresh air in the fashion world! This will only open doors for designers, and our dreams of one day becoming fashion models will never end - there is now a glimmer of hope ;)

Denim Denim Denim, our closet staple be it skinny or flare, bootcut or boyfriend; this magic material goes with EVERYTHING (well, except denim itself). You must agree that those fashion people up there have done almost everything they can to this basic piece - obvious from the ever-evolving styles. And lately, they have even pulled out their pliers, scuffs, nails, paint and TA DA .. we have distressed jeans. I am jealous that they can make work material look so sophisticated. And I hate how they make us want to buy them :( Although I do know of some mothers who will not allow their daughters to wear these torn, 'cheap looking' jeans.. mothers, mothers..

Anyway, talking about denim evolution, I've been seeing a lot of two styles lately and have a bit of mixed feelings about both of them. 1. The Slouchy Skinny 2. Denim Leggings.

1. Slouchy Skinny

Ok, so, I guess this is the combination of both skinny and slouchy, yes - loose at the thighs but tight around the ankles. This style is gaining a lot of popularity and I have a strong feeling it stemmed from Katie Holmes' 'fisherman' look. I'm thinking she couldn't find them in the market and had to make the look herself.

Hmm.. personally, I find this folded hem a bit too fishy for me. I must admit Mrs Cruise looks HOT but I don't think I'll be able to pull it off. But I DO like the slouchy skinny above. It looks very effortless chic, laid-back cool. And I bet in our humid weather, these are a lot more airy compared to the proper skinny skinnies. Verdict: YES for me :D

2. The Denim Leggings (aka Jeggings = Jeans + Leggings)

Yes, technology has allowed us to combine these two materials, fashion designers have managed to combine these two styles, and we have successfully combined these two words. Jeans/leggings that suppose to give you the 'perfect' fit. And here, Paris seems to agree with this trend:

BUT I'm a bit iffy - I think designed/styled wrongly, on the wrong body type, this trend can be a huge disaster! eg:

So, denim leggings - I feel, if styled correctly can look amazing but personally, I'll try and stay away from the general legging 'traps' - bright, shiny, glossy. I'd prefer to go for a darker matte shade for the ultimate slimming effect ;) I also hope we can find thinner jeggings around, my legs will definitely be sweating if these are thick and tight :s

Hey guys,

Ok, was planning on a fashion-y subject for my first post but really have got to share this clip I saw. I'm sure a lot of you would have seen it already, dubbed 'A True Love Story', it is a clip on care and affection, seperation then reunion. Yes, I'm talking about Christian the Lion. Ok, for those of you who have not seen it, here's the clip! Enjoy! and get some kleenex ready!

See, I told you to get the tissues ready - I teared up bad the first time I watched it. Anyway, been trying to find out more info on the two men and the lion, read up a bit online and they were also guests (well, not the lion of course) on the Oprah Show today. I was shocked to read that they bought the lion in Harrods London where they saw it caged up sometime in the 60s. Can you imagine seeing exotic animals for sale in Harrods today?? among the Oscar de la Rentas, and Missonis? Actually, come to the think of it, it'll be pretty cool (ok, i'm not condoning the sale of wild animals, just that i can imagine it on some posh fashion campaign ad). The two men have been back to Kenya another time after this clip was taken. And you can see that Christian's mane had grown. Such amazing shots to see humans in such close contact with a wild gentle beast.

It really gets one thinking, how closely we are connected to the animals in this world, the respect they hold for us and the love and protection we should be returning to them. I guess all of us can start small - maybe walk your dog today, or play with your cat, volunteer at the local SPCA.
